Day 2 Wrap: India 587! What’s Next for England?

 


On July 3,  Day 2 of the 2nd test against England in Birmingham. India scored at the end of day 2; it was all out 587.  Indian test captain Shubman Gill scored his maiden double century. He scored 269 runs innings, he became the first indians captain to score a double century in England. India had a lead of 510 at the end of the day.

Shubham Gill Historical Knock Of 269

Shubman Gill returned to action at 114* and smashed a career-best 269 off 387 balls, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's 221 from 1979 and becoming the first Indian skipper to reach a double-century in England.


Together with Ravindra Jadeja (89), he formed an incredible sixth-wicket stand of 203 runs, which helped India reach 587 all out in 151 overs.


Lower-order support Sundar

Washington Sundar strengthened the innings with a patient 42 off 103 balls.


In 45 overs, Shoaib Bashir took three wickets for 167, while pacers Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue both took two.

England’s collapse & fightback

England's response saw them lose to 25/3, with Mohammed Siraj taking Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, and Ollie Pope to Akash Deep's two goals. Akash Deep's double-strike explosion established the mood. However, the slide was stopped at 77/3 at stumps, trailing by a daunting 510 runs, thanks to an undefeated 52-run fourth-wicket stand from Joe Root (18) and Harry Brook (30)*.
