India registered a record-breaking win in the third ODI against the West Indies in Trinidad

In the 3rd ODI vs West Indies, as India edged past Pakistan in terms of the world record, Kishan joins Dhoni as a milestone

Records were broken when India defeated West Indies in the decisive third and final ODI at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad to win the three-match series 2–1. This was India's 13th consecutive bilateral ODI series win against West Indies, increasing their world record. They haven't lost a single ODI series against the Windies since 2007. The next best is Pakistan, who have won 11 consecutive ODI series against Zimbabwe. India's 200-run win on Tuesday was also the second-biggest win (in terms of runs) in ODIs against the West Indies.

India vs West Indies ODI final Match

The batsmen of Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and later Hardik Pandya laid the foundation for the victory by scoring 351/5. India was looking to avoid their first series defeat at the hands of the West Indies since 2006 and the visiting batsmen gave them a significant advantage.

Ishan Kishan joins Dhoni and others in the record books

Kishan scored 77 off 64 balls before falling to Yannick Kariya in the 20th over. His wicket ended his opening partnership with Shubman Gill at the score of 143 runs. It was the highest opening partnership for India in ODIs in West Indies and in the process, Kishan scored his third consecutive ODI fifty. Thus he became the sixth Indian player to score 50 or more runs in each match of a three-match ODI series. The last person to do so was Shreyas Iyer, who scored half-centuries in each of India's three overseas matches against New Zealand in 2020.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth was the first Indian batsman to do so, having achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in 1982. Then came Dilip Vengsarkar against Sri Lanka in 1985 and then Mohammad Azharuddin against the same opponent in 1993. No Indian was able to do this then. Did this against Australia in 2019, 26 years before MS Dhoni. After this Iyer and Kishan did the same.

India's highest ODI score in West Indies

It was also India's highest ODI score in the West Indies, surpassing the previous best of 339/6 on 26 June 2009. India won that match by 20 runs, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul top-scoring for the hosts with 63 off 59 balls. At that time, Yuvraj Singh had scored 131 off 102 balls for India, but none of the batsmen of the visiting team scored a century on Tuesday. This is the most runs scored by India without a century by any of its batsmen, surpassing the previous highest score of 350/6 against Sri Lanka at Nagpur in 2005.

Instead, four of India's top five scored half-centuries, the seventh instance of this happening for the team in ODI cricket. While Kishan scored 77 off 64 balls, his opening partner Shubman Gill scored 85 off 92 balls. After this Sanju Samson came and scored 51 runs in 41 balls. After this, Captain Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten after playing a stormy innings of 70 runs in 52 balls. Among the Indians who came out to bat on Tuesday, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, and Ravindra Jadeja were the only players who could not score a half-century. While at the other end, Jadeja was unbeaten on eight off seven and Pandya got India a big win, Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed on eight off 14. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for 35 off 30 before falling victim to Romario Shepherd.

In reply, West Indies lost four wickets inside 11 overs as Mukesh Kumar (3/30) bowled with the new ball. The hosts could not recover from the poor start and Shardul Thakur came in and took 4 for 37. India dismissed West Indies for 151 runs in 35.3 overs.
